Many bands that make a new record after more than a decade seem to miss a step. However, that’s not the case with Coroner’s Dissonance Theory, this is a well crafted release that seemingly builds on the band’s previous efforts.
Coroner is a thrash metal band from Switzerland formed back in 1983. They are probably one of the most underrated thrash acts in metal history. Far ahead of their time due to their incorporation of elements like classical music, progressive rock, jazz, and industrial metal. Along with peers Voivod and Watchtower, the band has been credited for helping to pioneer the subgenre now known as technical thrash metal.
Between 1989 and 1993, Coroner were one of my favorite groups, I listened to the albums No More Color (1989) and Mental Vortex (1991) regularly.
Then the band went into a metal hibernation and stopped releasing new material. Needless to say, they vanished from my mind. Now, 32 years later, Coroner has returned with an unbridled vengeance!
How they managed to release an album after 30+ years and still sound unique is simply unreal. Many bands that make a new record after more than a decade seem to miss a step. However, that’s not the case with Coroner’s Dissonance Theory, this is a well crafted release that seemingly builds on the band’s previous efforts.
My favorite Coroner album has always been No More Color (1989), but I must admit, Dissonance Theory has more of an edge. The guitar work, especially the solos, are the highlight of the album. The solid riffing and odd time changes gives this record a lot of replay ability. I’ve been listening to this release at least twice a day since buying it and while I LOVE the entire effort, there are a few songs that standout as real highlights for me: “The Law”, “Transparent Eye”, “Crisium Bound”, “Symmetry” and “Renewal”.
Coroner has returned and the timing couldn’t be any more perfect. With so many mainstream thrash acts calling it a career, it’s refreshing to have these old masters back to show the world how it’s done. I can’t wait to see Coroner live on this tour! Check out Dissonance Theory and let discord of Coroner bring out the disharmony within you! \m/
