PYOGENESIS - A Silent Soul Screams Loud

Once considered a pioneer of the Gothic metal scene, the act has recently delved into the realm of extreme experimentation.

It’s been awhile since I reviewed a record. This wasn’t by choice, I just wasn’t in a situation where I could devote the time necessary for a review. I like to listen to a new record at least 6 times before I draw any conclusions. Sometimes it takes multiple listens before you gain the direction an album is truly taking.

Pyogenesis is a German metal band. Active since 1991, the group has run the metal gambit, experimenting with styles such as melodic death metal, alternative metal and punk rock. Once considered a pioneer of the Gothic metal scene, the act has recently delved into the realm of extreme experimentation. Their latest effort, A Silent Soul Screams Loud, hit the streets last month (January 24^th2020) via AFM Records.

I have to admit I was curious, what would a band like Pyogenesis sound like? Lyrically, their style is slightly reminiscent of Fates Warning (No Exit – 1988, Awaken The Guardian – 1986) or even Dream Theater (Images And Words 1992, Distance Over Time – 2019). The group offers a stadium quality delivery, featuring strong choruses that stay with you long after the album is finished. Highlight tracks for me are: “Survival Of The Fittest”, “Mother Bohemia” and “The Capital (A Silent Soul Screams Loud)”.

If there is a knock against Pyogenesis it can be found in their diversity. Although this record’s poetic thought process seems to have a logical flow, the consistency of the music doesn’t. Even after multiple listens I found it hard to go from the extreme to an airy mainstream without any real transition. I found myself blindsided by sounds, wondering if I had missed a track.
