The most recent music video, “Illuminate The Path” is a feast for both the eyes and ears. A spectacular performance offering, I feel like this track and accompanying visuals will surpass fans’ expectations, pushing the boundaries of what we’ve come to expect from Arch Enemy.
I’ve always been a fan of Arch Enemy but when Angela Gossow retired paving the way for Alissa White-Gluz to take the helm I was hesitant to jump on the band wagon.
I respected Arch Enemy’s roots, they were a literal metal supergroup comprised of former members of prolific bands like Carcass, Nevermore, Mercyful Fate and Carnage, all fronted by one of the hottest women in metal. I’ll admit, I was used to Gossow’s stage presence and vocal delivery. In my mind, Wages of Sin (2001) will always be a death metal classic.
Back in 2014, Gossow unexpectedly released a statement announcing her departure from Arch Enemy. She welcomed her replacement, the former vocalist of a Canadian metalcore band called The Agonist. I guess the word metalcore is what soured me on this change. Back in 2014, I hadn’t yet warmed up to the thought of a hardcore fusion of extremity. I didn’t believe a vocalist with that type of background would be able to helm a melodic death metal band from Sweden; I was wrong.
Lately, I’ve come to appreciate this re-vamped version of Arch Enemy more with each listen. War Eternal (2014), Will To Power (2017) and Deceivers (2022) are constantly in my speakers. I feel like the music of Arch Enemy is evolving into greatness and Alissa White-Gluz is at the forefront of this attack. The new release, Blood Dynasty, unveiled in March of this year via Century Media Records, has my plasma flowing.
