Blue Medusa has made their metal mark by encompassing a sound and style that is both technically sophisticated and visually expressive. I was fearful the group would come off as an Arch Enemy clone made up of women but that is not the case.
On November 23rd, 2025, Arch Enemy announced the departure of vocalist Alissa White-Gluz. The metal world was shocked; she’d fronted the band for twelve years.
Some of the group’s best material had been released under her reign. I’d come to respect her stage presence and vocal prowess. Will To Power (2017) is one of my favorite Arch Enemy efforts.
I purchased Blood Dynasty (2025) as soon as it was released.
In February of 2026, Arch Enemy released a new single, “To the Last Breath”, which introduced Lauren Hart, formerly of Once Human, as the band’s new lead vocalist.
I wondered how Alissa White-Gluz was planning to rebound. Blue Medusa is the answer.
A new metal band, who just released their debut single and music video, “Checkmate,” in March of 2026.
Musically, Blue Medusa lineup thrives upon diversity. Utilizing different disciplines and backgrounds. The lineup includes guitarists Alyssa Day and Dani Sophia whose backgrounds are as diverse as the music they represent.
Dani’s jazz education and harmonic sensibility offsets Alyssa’s extreme guitar style. Which is the rhythmic foundation for Alissa White-Gluz’s vocals.
The accompanying video is largely a performance offering with some ‘chess piece theatrics’ woven in. It feels like Alissa is playing for her sanity or perhaps her very existence.
Who is the figure cloaked in red who basically disintegrates at the end of the video? Is this a result of a ‘checkmate’?
Blue Medusa has made their metal mark by encompassing a sound and style that is both technically sophisticated and visually expressive. I was fearful the group would come off as an Arch Enemy clone made up of women but that is not the case.
This new direction will undoubtedly re-define Alissa White-Gluz as a premier metal vocalist and will formally separate her from Arch Enemy’s fame.
I’m excited to see and hear what this band does next. \m/
