Mauled seems determined to take us back to the origins of deathcore while still incorporating modern influences.
Whenever I think of heavy metal in Indiana I think about two iconic front men who were born in the ‘Hoosier State’. Those artists are Axl Rose (Guns N’ Roses) who was born in Lafayette, Indiana and David Lee Roth (Van Halen) who hailed from Bloomington.
Not really known as a hotbed of metal, it seems great bands coming out of the crossroads of America have been few and far in between, until now. Mauled is a deathcore act from Indianapolis and I believe they are worth a listen.
Established back in 2022 the group is relatively new to the scene. Their debut EP, When Your Eyes Are Shut, is due to hit the streets on March 13th 2026.
A new video for the song “Drop Dead Gorgeous” has just been released to hype the effort. This is a performance offering with a theatrical opening that really sticks with you.
“Drop Dead Gorgeous” is deathcore done right. The pioneers of this sound, band’s like: Despised Icon, Whitechapel, Suicide Silence, Carnifex and Job For A Cowboy, had a viciousness that helped define this genre. A diabolical sound that was unique when compared to other death metal groups who were rooted in more classic, melodical or technical styles.
Mauled seems determined to take us back to the origins of deathcore while still incorporating modern influences. The “Drop Dead Gorgeous” music video is a throwback take on extremity but with enough diversity to demand repeat viewings.
The music features emotional breakdowns, frenzied drums and tortuous squealing all of which are highly reminiscent of deathcore’s notable originators. This offering also includes guest vocals by JP Kaine of Surfaced, another new deathcore outfit established in 2022, hailing from Kentucky.
Lyrically, Mauled reminds me a lot of early Carnifex. A mature content that seemingly focused on relationships and heartbreak. Featuring the bloody resolution we’d expect of deathcore.
The sampling found at the opening of the video is uncommon in this genre and furthers the group’s overall message in a profound way.
I’m excited to experience a group willing to take a step forward while at the same time looking back on the origins they’re a part of. Check out “Drop Dead Gorgeous” by Mauled and let these ‘old school’ deathcore vibes penetrate your skull! \m/
