Paradise Lost is a gothic metal band from England. Formed in 1988, they are considered a pioneer of the death-doom genre as well as considered a main influence of the gothic metal movement.
Unbelievably, aside from replacing their drummer, the group’s line up has remained intact. Paradise lost has released sixteen full length efforts with number seventeen, Ascension, unveiled earlier this month (September 19th) via Nuclear Blast Records. A new music video, “Tyrants Serenade” has been unveiled to hype the effort.
A performance piece with some desolate images thrown in. This video has you feeling the chills of the wintery landscapes shown in the offering. The music almost serves as a backdrop for this eerie desolation. Oppressive as the song’s title suggests, a stifling melody that is more of a lament than lyrical chant. The lyrics are like a piece of literature from the romantic period; set to move you emotionally.
Consistency and stability are undoubtedly key cogs to Paradise Lost’s continued success. If “Tyrants Serenade” is any indication of the material found on Ascension, it’s a perfect blend of all the styles Paradise Lost has explored over the years. This is an excellent follow up to Obsidian.
My first exposure to this band was Draconian Times and I’ve since exposed myself to all their offerings. The band has always given me a Type O Negative vibe, something I have always cherished. There is something about their music that appeals to me on a very deep level. It’s a dreamy style of metal that is rarely heard today.
Check out “Tyrants Serenade” and let the gothic vibes of Paradise Lost bring about an ascension in you! \m/
