Witchsorrow has struck the devil’s cord with this effort, and I urge you to pledge allegiance to the dark lord while you still can!
There’s something about doom metal that’s always appealed to me. Perhaps it’s the creepy atmosphere and heavily occult based song lyrics. I’m a sucker for late ‘60s early ‘70s satanism. In my mind, conjuring the Devil always seemed more possible back then.
The “Satanic Panic” which arose from the counterculture movement of the ‘60s was a real event. Electrified by the rise of the Church of Satan in 1966 and further fueled by the media’s fascination with high profile crimes like the Manson Family murders in1969, it seemingly set the stage for the ‘80s frenzy of linking heavy metal and alternative lifestyles to all things evil.
Witchsorrow is a group that epitomizes this wicked mentality completely. Hailing from Farnborough, Hampshire in the United Kingdom the group has been active since 2005.
The brainchild of Nick “Necroskull” Ruskell, who is a writer and editor for the rock magazine Kerrang!, and his wife Emily “Witch” Ruskell. The group has released four full length efforts with number five, The Devil And All His Works, due to hit the streets July 3rd via Church Road Records.
Drawing heavily from the works of famed English occult writer Dennis Yates Wheatley, the music of The Devil And All His Works is in the vein of bands like Black Sabbath, Candlemass and Saint Vitus. The ambiance of the release is wickedly brilliant. The guitar working is like something out of the netherworld, distorted musical notes dripping out of a cauldron filled with blood. Haunted vocals reminiscent of a séance gone astray, a bewitching overture that cannot be denied. Highlight tracks for me are: “Bacchus”, “Hades Chains”, “In Triumph We Rot!” and “A Quintessence Of Dust”.
