1988’s Monument is my personal favorite. At one time the song “Speed Freak” was my thrash metal anthem. I still play the track regularly.
There was a time, before the death metal explosion, when all I really listened to was: Slayer, Death and Hallows Eve.
I vividly remember driving my car around with a cassette tape of the River’s Edge soundtrack. In my mind, Hallows Eve never got the recognition they deserved.
Hallows Eve is from Atlanta, Georgia. Rumor has it the band was founded on Halloween, 1983. The original line-up was: Dave Stuart and Skullator (Stephen K. Shoemaker) on guitar, Tommy Sewart on bass and Stacy Anderson contributing vocals.
The word Halloween or Hallowe’en dates as far back as 1745. Christian in origin, the word means “Saint’s Evening”. Halloween customs we know today are believed to have been influenced by the practices and beliefs of the Celtic lands. Many of these have pagan roots. The origins of these Halloween traditions are typically linked to the Gaelic festival, Samhain.
Hallows Eve has achieved cult status in the thrash metal scene. The group made an impact on the big screen scoring offerings in the film soundtracks: Pacific Heights (1990) River’s Edge (1986), and the cult horror film Black Roses (1988).
Playing one of the first forms of speed/thrash metal they managed to release five full length albums before splitting up. In my mind, their first three albums (Tales Of Terror – 1985, Death & Insanity – 1986, Monument – 1988) are ‘80s classics.
1988’s Monument is my personal favorite. At one time the song “Speed Freak” was my thrash metal anthem. I still play the track regularly.
Line-up problems plagued Hallows Eve throughout their career, eventually ending the band in 1989. Although Hallows Eve eventually reformed, releasing two albums independently, (Evil Never Dies – 2005 & The Neverending Sleep – 2008) the magic was gone.
In my world, everyday is Halloween. Why not give yourself a treat and jam some Hallows Eve! \m/
